This book continues the series, picking up in a world where kingdoms are, with increasing frequency, ruled by a pair of rulers that includes a mage. Allegra, a young girl from Aronsdale, has been accepted in the mages' training center in the capital; she knows that she has some power, but also realizes that her power is quite limited. As she is traveling from her parents' farm, she is captured and kidnapped; her captures are rough bandits from Jazid who have crossed the border in order to capture a gird with specific physical features. During their flight into Jazid, she is treated badly and is only saved from rape by the leader of the band. When they arrive in their camp, she discovers the reason for her capture: she is to sold to a "general" from the remnants of the defeated Jazid army. She also learns that her new role is to be a "pleasure slave," with all the unsavory associations; In Jazid, she is not even a human being, and she will be expected to show absolute obedience to her owner, whatever he may require of her. At the auction, she is purchased by the Prince Regent, much to the dismay of the main general of their army, a man who takes pleasure from others' pain and humiliation. She knows that this general, Dusk, still desires her and keeps trying to escape.
This novel definitely had a dark side: many of the male characters in Jazid are unsettling and, in some instances, disgusting, evil folks. Readers who don't read about this should steer clear. If that is not a deal-breaker, the novel is, like Asaro's many other books, a compelling read. The plot is powerful and engaging; the central characters, especially Allegra, is a strong woman who refuses to settle into her new life as a slave (and wife); the writing is up to Asaro's usual high standards. Because of the caveat discussed above, I would not recommend it for younger readers. Otherwise, I would recommend it for more mature readers who like sword and sorcery novels.

There are some really great elements in this book, but they are all secondary plot lines, throwbacks to previous books, or dismal foreshadowing for the future of the Lost Continent.

The main plot line, and Allegra's lack of real emotional response to it made me sick. Several times, including the rape scene, Allegra seems to just shrug it off and move on. Only Della's one comment over half way through the book even acknowledges it, and Allegra brushes that off.

While Allegra doesn't accept her place in the culture of Jazid, her reactions just don't feel right for someone who was born and raised in a culture that is almost entirely opposite of that. Her internal 'conflict' has the feel of a junior high school girl who is trying to decide which shoes to wear to a high school dance rather than a woman sold into slavery, and sexually abused by almost every male she comes into contact with dealing with conflicting emotions for her rapist.

That Catherine Asaro decided to tackle the concept of an exceedingly repressive society toward women, or that she even included a rape scene, or the fight and torture scenes is not the problem. The fact that the main character who is the victim of all of these things doesn't seem emotionally affected by them most of the time, is.

The only reason this has two stars is because the Ozi character is done so well. In some ways, his character has more depth than Allegra.

This is the first of Asaro's works that I have actually regretted purchasing.
This was my introduction to "The Lost Continent", which prompted me to get the rest of them. Great reading.
Catharine Asaro has done it again. An enjoyable read, Night Bird is a continuation of The Lost Continent series & is less science based than the Skolian Empire series but the characterisation is just as complex. I like the way she shows both the strength and weaknesses of her
characters. The Night Bird can be read alone but you will probably find yourself drawn to reading the other books in the series. Enjoy.
I'm still reading it but only have 6 chapters left. I started reading the series when I found The Charmed Sphere in my favorite second hand book store and I couldn't put it down. When I went to look for more like it, I was delighted to find it was a series and I lucked out to have started with the first one. I've loved all of them. I thought I would tire of the plots from book to book but they differ so to the point that even though they are similar in nature, they are still fresh and new and intriguing to read. I am unable to put the book down. I force myself so I can go on with day to day activities. I am very sad that there are no more after this one but I understand that Catherine Asaro wants to write more but hasn't have time. So there is hope for the adventure to continue after The Night Bird! She wants to write about Price Aron's story. I've talked to her on Facebook and she is so nice and talks to everyone. I can't wait to finish this book to find out what happens but I also don't want it to end. It's all so lovely!
Okay, I love Cathrine Asaro fantasy. This is a professional woman who owns a research facility has a PHhd. in physic and a series of science fiction longer then my arm. But to me she is a great writer of fantasy. This is a standalone book in her Misty Cliff series where magic uses geometrical shapes and sometimes music to focus. So we have shape and color of magic, the more side to the shape the more powerfull the magic and higher the frequency of the color. In this story we have a girl who sings her magic she still need to have a shape to focus. But when she sings lullabies people really go to sleep.

I think some of the fixes that she gets into were kind of contrive and should or would not had happen if this story was in a real world. But I still love her writing. I am glad that there is a Luna Imprint for good fantasy to get printed but hate the Tradebook size. But Im not waiting a year till they print the mass market paperback to get a good novel.

five stars all the way. If this is you first introduction to this world I suggest you find the Cliff of Mist series first. or later or at the same time.
